Audi Design

Audi's are elegant. They always have been, and within recent years this style trait has not only been maintained, it's been coupled with a healthy dose of badass.
Innovation in design is not always welcomed with opened arms. Sometimes it meets resistance head on, and usually at the forefront of that resistance stands tradition. For Audi, this translates to the Bauhaus design, which notably lacked ornamentation and stressed the relationship between function and design.
This like all traditions became the basis for critique. The cultural starting point for an artist to create from so to speak. Which is ironic, as in the Bauhaus school, history was not taught with the mind that art should be created from principle rather than be influenced by something that had already been made.
It is this legacy that Walter de'Silva entered into when he became the Head of Design to the Audi brand group in 2002. During his time with Audi he designed many models including the kickass A5\S5.
When asked about Audi's Bauhaus design and how it relates to his work he gives us some insight into the resistance of change.
I can still hear them now: "Ah, this guy, he wants to destroy the Bauhaus design." I say why not? I'm not afraid to take risks with new and creative design language. It is better to lead than to follow and you cannot lead without taking risks...1

In 2007, de'Silva became the Head of Design at the Volkswagen Group, and Stefan Sielaff took over as Head of Design at Audi AG.
For clear and clean product design, Scandinavia is still a place to go, where we draw a lot of inspiration. From an architectural point of view, we look to the U.S., at architects like Frank Lloyd Wright. I'm a big fan of Frank Gehry.2

Equally important to the design presence at Audi is Jae Min. Jae put in 13 years at Audi before being promoted to Chief Designer at Volkswagen Group of America, Design Center California.
Relevancy. Simplicity. Elegance. Efficiency. That’s the way I like to do things.3

To really get artsy about Audi Design here is a fantastic performance piece that Audi produced called "Audi Sinfonie". This is the killer part 3 of 5. Definitely check out all 5 parts.
Having spent my whole life around Audi's, suffice it to say they have always been a source of inspiration to me, and I'm even more enthused that presently after so many years they still continue to not only inspire but have taken their product and brand to a whole different level.
